Lex Heilijgers (1949) has been painting and drawing for as long as he remembers. He frequently paints abstract townscapes, which visualize both his fascination for the interaction of lines, forms and colours and his interest in architecture. Especially little towns and villages built against hills and mountains in a sun-drenched Mediterranean setting, appeal to his imagination. Back home, pencil drawings and drafts, and pictures made during his trips on site, serve as a starting point for the paintings.
Another challenge wherein line, form and colour are equally important, are his abstract still lives.
Some fifteen years ago he started creating sculptures as well. Part of the sculptures is based on silhouettes of nomadic people and wooden figures and ancestor statues of African tribes like the Dogon. Though of a modest size, these sculptures are highly impressive and
possess a special charisma through a graceful and proud pose in combination with an abstract way of modelling.
